On Monday 19 December 2016, just 6 days before Christmas, an “attack” on a Berlin Christmas market occurred. The suspect used a large truck with a carriage to collide into the market, which has killed at least 12 people and injured at least 48 more.
German media are reporting that the suspect has been arrested.
The incident, which has eerie similarities to the truck attack in Nice earlier this year, is likely to be a terrorist attack, as described by German police officials on the scene.
Eyewitness Emma Rushton said: “Police were there very quickly. Ambulances didn’t come until after we left, but police were there very quickly.
“It looks it [deliberate] from our point of view.” She later added that she felt the truck was travelling at around 40mph.
Chancellor Angela Merkel is being briefed by the interior minister of Germany, as well as the mayor of Berlin at this current moment.
“We mourn the dead and hope that the many injured can be helped” were the words tweeted out by Merkel’s official spokesperson. The situation is ongoing and this article will be updated accordingly.
