BREAKING: Gunshots and “panic” have been heard by the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France at around 1628hrs local time.
Police in Paris confirmed they are attending an “incident” at the world-famous Cathedral, and have warned the public to stay away.
According to French media, a lone attacker targeted an armed police officer with a hammer, and has subsequently shot and injured by officers on scene.
The French prosecutor’s office has announced a terrorism investigation is to be opened following the incident, led by the countries counter-terrorism office.
Twitter users trapped inside the Cathedral are telling of witnessing police bomb squads arriving on the scene, and of smelling “powder” after hearing at least 2 shots fired. It is believed 2000 people are currently inside the iconic landmark whilst police “assess the situation”.
The news comes only days after the devastating terrorist attack in London that killed 7 and injured dozens on Saturday 3 June.
